I'm very impressed with the look of LMM and am interested in integrating it into my toolset. I'm having trouble getting started, though. I'm trying to implement a very simple test case - I'm trying to import the textured cube one gets from walking through MilkShape's 'Applying a Texture' example. I've exported the file from MilkShape as an .obj (and associated .mtl). I can import the .obj into LMMwithout a problem, but how do I get the .mtl and the texture image all loaded and visible in LMM?

LMM does not support MilkShape's mtl. You should add texture manually.

what modeling program does it support? Would blender or 3ds max have compatible mtls? Could I import my Milkshape model into Blender, export it from Blender, and have Lmm import it along with its textures?

LMM can import .3ds and .x files with its textures. If you use Awakening, the Google Sketchup is a good choice for modeling program.
