I import my mesh into Light Map Maker. Then I export it. I import the lightmap mesh into the original one, and I get those horrid squiggly pieces everywhere because the lightmap mesh is not aligned with the original mesh enough. This is because Light Map Maker is inaccurate. I have to snap to a grid of .25 pixels in order to overcome this.

Which exporter you used? Except VRML97, other exporters should be accurate.

Obj, .X, and .3ds. It works with smaller meshes, maybe it has to do with smoothing groups, UVs, normals or groups.
